Michael Escoffery

Born in Jamaica, Michael Escoffery explores the human figure through expressive color, angular contours, and overlapping forms. Raised in an artistic household, he developed an early commitment to art before moving to the United States in his twenties. His practice draws on his Caribbean heritage and experiences across cultures.

The female figure holds a central place in Escoffery’s work. His paintings depict moments of contemplation, intimacy, and everyday life, bringing geometric structure to the softness of bodies and gestures. Repeated faces, resting figures, and maternal embraces invite viewers to consider the relationship between outward presence and private experience.

Working across painting, sculpture, portraiture, and abstraction, Escoffery has also explored questions of history, identity, and power. Earlier bodies of work addressed apartheid, Malcolm X, and the symbolism of the American flag, revealing the breadth of his engagement with social and political subjects.

Escoffery has received numerous awards for his work, including recognition from the United States government.

Across his varied practice, color and form remain vehicles for human connection. His work invites close looking while leaving room for individual interpretation.
