Cheikhou Ba

Incorporating an existentialist world view on the human condition behind a screen of false innocence, Cheikhou Ba explores forms of the submissive through the visual language of fantasy in popular culture. In his research, Ba explores different aspects of life that can be transformed and interpreted within his art. Still, the notion of respect for individual and collective rights and liberties takes the form of a ritual throughout his artworks.

One of the most multifaceted creators to emerge from National School of Fine Arts in Dakar, Ba creates artistic collections on canvas in which he recreates a harsh, bipolar universe of success and tragedy from enjoyable and cheerfully vibrant, unapologetic colors.

Ba uses drawing, painting or sculpture to explore the principle of metamorphosis with the will to recreate the primordial equation inherent in the esoteric philosophies of the people from Sub-Saharan Africa: the sum of everything is equal to this indefinable unknown on which everything relies.  In his work, the spirit is conceived through matter and takes the form of a creative representation.  They epitomize the process of mutation of an individual, whether that is the physical appearance or the personality.

Ba lives and works in Dakar, Senegal.  His works have been shown in major galleries and exhibitions globally; and are among impressive private collections.
